The Dept. of Dakota was created 1866 and consisted of the State of
Minnesota, and the Territories of Montana and Dakota.
The most famous unit in the Dept. of Dakota was undoubtedly the 7th
U.S. Cavalry commanded by Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer.
