Northern Pacific RR

The Northern Pacific Railway project was

conceived in 1864 through a bill signed by President

Abraham Lincoln. Construction finally began in 1870

from the East side starting near Carlton, Minnesota

and from the west side at Kalama, Washington

Territory. In August of 1883 the two lines met and

the final spike was driven at Gold Creek, Montana.

The Northern Pacific was the line that would carry

General Custer many times from Fort Abraham Lincoln

to St. Paul, Minnesota on his trips back and forth East.

It was because of the Northern Pacific that Custer and

his 7th Cavalry would come to North Dakota. In 1873, the

7th was ordered to protect the railroad workers as they lay

track in Montana. It was during this Yellowstone Expedition

that Custer and the 7th Cavalry would have their first run-in with

Sitting Bull and his Sioux Warriors.

In 1970, the Northern Pacific Railway would merge into

the Burlington Northern. A great reproduction of western

Americana.
